What is Fate Stay Night?

Fate Stay Night is a Japanese visual novel game created by TYPE-MOON, which was originally released on January 30, 2004. It is TYPE-MOON's first commercial work, following its transition from a doujin soft visual novel group. Set in the same universe as previous TYPE-MOON releases, it is among the most well-known and popular visual novels in history, securing the title of "highest selling visual novel" in 2004 of the adult game retailer Getchu.com.

A brief introduction to the visual novel and its popularity

Fate Stay Night takes place in 2004, in a parallel world from Tsukihime, another TYPE-MOON work. Fuyuki City is the setting for a secret and violent war among competing magi. For the past two centuries, seven magi were gathered and engage in a Battle Royale, each gambling his or her own life to obtain the Holy Grail, a legendary chalice capable of granting wishes. The past four Holy Grail Wars have typically occurred every sixty years, but the fifth war has eerily started prematurely, only ten years after the fourth war. Each magus, better known as a Master, is aided by one of the seven summoned spiritual familiars known as Servants, who are the reincarnations of legendary souls from all across time. These resurrected Heroic Spirits possess superhuman characteristics and wield powerful artifacts or abilities called Noble Phantasms.

The player assumes the role of Shirou Emiya, a high school student who accidentally witnesses a battle between two Servants at his school and summons his own Servant, Saber. He soon finds himself involved in the Holy Grail War against his will. He must survive against other Masters and Servants while also protecting his friends and allies.

The game features three narrative routes that diverge depending on the player's choices: Fate, Unlimited Blade Works, and Heaven's Feel. Each route focuses on different themes, characters, relationships, and outcomes. The game also has multiple endings for each route, some good and some bad. The game has a total of 40+ hours of gameplay, with rich and immersive storytelling, stunning artwork, and memorable music.

The three narrative routes and their adaptations

The first route, Fate, is the "oneself as an ideal" route. It focuses on Shirou's relationship with Saber and his struggle to uphold his ideal of becoming a hero of justice. Saber is the Servant of the Saber class, and her true identity is King Arthur, the legendary king of Britain. She is loyal, honorable, and noble, but also cold and distant. She seeks the Holy Grail to undo her past and save her country.

The second route, Unlimited Blade Works, is the "struggling with oneself as an ideal" route. It focuses on Shirou's rivalry with Archer, his future self who has become disillusioned with his ideal and seeks to kill him. It also explores his relationship with Rin Tohsaka, the Master of Archer and the heroine of this route. Rin is the Servant of the Archer class, and his true identity is Emiya Shirou, a former Master who participated in the previous Holy Grail War and made a contract with the world to become a Counter Guardian, a defender of humanity. He is cynical, sarcastic, and pragmatic, but also compassionate and loyal. He regrets his choices and wants to prevent Shirou from following his path.

The third route, Heaven's Feel, is the "friction with real and ideal" route. It focuses on Shirou's relationship with Sakura Matou, a childhood friend who has a crush on him and harbors a dark secret. It also reveals the true nature of the Holy Grail War and its consequences. Sakura is the Master of Rider, a Servant of the Rider class. Her true identity is Medusa, the Gorgon monster from Greek mythology. She is gentle, timid, and kind, but also suffers from abuse and corruption. She is the vessel of the Holy Grail, a cursed artifact that grants wishes by creating disasters.

Each route has been adapted into various media forms, such as anime series, movies, manga, light novels, and video games. Some of these adaptations are faithful to the original source material, while others are creative reinterpretations or spin-offs. Some of the most notable adaptations are:

  • The Fate Stay Night anime series (2006), produced by Studio Deen, which covers the Fate route with some elements from the other routes.

  • The Fate Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works anime series (2014-2015), produced by ufotable, which covers the Unlimited Blade Works route with some original scenes.

  • The Fate Stay Night: Heaven's Feel movie trilogy (2017-2020), produced by ufotable, which covers the Heaven's Feel route.

  • The Fate/Zero anime series (2011-2012), produced by ufotable, which is a prequel to Fate Stay Night that tells the story of the fourth Holy Grail War.

  • The Fate/Grand Order mobile game (2015-present), developed by Delightworks and Aniplex, which is a spin-off that features a parallel world where the Holy Grail War has gone wrong and threatens to destroy human history.

The Fate series and its spin-offs

Fate Stay Night is not only a visual novel game but also a franchise that has spawned many other works in different genres and media. The Fate series is a collective term for all the works related to Fate Stay Night or its spin-offs. Some of these works are set in the same universe as Fate Stay Night, while others are alternate realities or parallel worlds. Some of these works are official canon, while others are fan-made or non-canon. Some of these works are collaborations with other franchises or crossover events.

Some of the most popular and well-known works in the Fate series are:

  • Fate/hollow ataraxia (2005), a visual novel game that is a sequel to Fate Stay Night that takes place six months after the events of the fifth Holy Grail War.

  • Fate/Extra (2010), a role-playing game that takes place in a virtual world where a different Holy Grail War is held.

  • Fate/Apocrypha (2012-2014), a light novel series that takes place in a parallel world where the third Holy Grail War ended differently and resulted in a large-scale war between two factions of Masters and Servants.

  • Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya (201 -2018), a manga and anime series that is a spin-off that features Illyasviel von Einzbern, a minor character from Fate Stay Night, as a magical girl who collects the cards of the Servants.

  • Fate/Prototype (2011-2017), a light novel and anime series that is based on the original concept of Fate Stay Night before it was revised.

  • Fate/strange fake (2015-present), a light novel and manga series that takes place in a parallel world where a false Holy Grail War is held in America.

  • Fate/Extella (2016-2018), a hack and slash game that takes place after the events of Fate/Extra and features a conflict between different factions of Servants over the control of the Moon Cell.

  • Fate/Apocrypha (2017), an anime series that is an adaptation of the light novel series of the same name.

  • Fate/Extra Last Encore (2018), an anime series that is an alternate retelling of Fate/Extra with some original elements.

  • Fate/stay night: Heaven's Feel III. spring song (2020), an anime movie that is the final part of the trilogy adaptation of the Heaven's Feel route.

These are just some of the many works in the Fate series, which has become one of the most successful and influential franchises in the anime, manga, and game industry. The Fate series has also inspired many fan works, such as doujinshi, fan fiction, fan art, cosplay, and more. The Fate series has also collaborated with other franchises, such as Re:Zero, Puella Magi Madoka Magica, Kara no Kyoukai, and more.

What is a voice patch?

A voice patch is a fan-made modification or add-on that adds voice acting to a visual novel game that originally does not have it. Voice patches are usually created by fans who extract the voice files from other official or unofficial sources, such as anime adaptations, drama CDs, or other games. Voice patches are usually distributed for free online, but they may require the user to own the original game or other related media.

The difference between voiced and unvoiced visual novels

Visual novels are interactive fiction games that use text, images, sound, and sometimes video to tell a story. The player can make choices that affect the plot and the outcome of the game. Visual novels can be divided into two categories based on whether they have voice acting or not: voiced and unvoiced.

Voiced visual novels are those that have voice acting for some or all of the characters and dialogue in the game. Voice acting can enhance the immersion, emotion, and personality of the characters and the story. Voice acting can also help the player to understand the tone, mood, and context of the dialogue. Voice acting can also make the game more accessible for people who have difficulty reading or prefer listening to audio.

Unvoiced visual novels are those that do not have voice acting for any of the characters or dialogue in the game. The player has to read all of the text on the screen and imagine how the characters sound and speak. Unvoiced visual novels can allow more freedom and creativity for the player to interpret and imagine the story. Unvoiced visual novels can also save costs and time for the developers and publishers, as they do not have to hire voice actors or record audio files.

The benefits of voice acting in visual novels

While some people may prefer unvoiced visual novels for various reasons, many people enjoy voiced visual novels for their advantages. Some of the benefits of voice acting in visual novels are:

  • It can make the characters more realistic, relatable, and memorable. Voice acting can convey the emotions, expressions, and personalities of the characters better than text alone. Voice acting can also give each character a distinct voice and accent that matches their appearance and background.

  • It can make the story more engaging, immersive, and dramatic. Voice acting can create a more vivid and dynamic atmosphere for the story. Voice acting can also add tension, suspense, humor, and romance to the scenes. Voice acting can also make the player feel more involved and invested in the story.

  • It can make the game more enjoyable, entertaining, and fun. Voice acting can make the game more appealing and attractive to play. Voice acting can also make the game more diverse and varied by adding different voices and sounds. Voice acting can also make the game more rewarding and satisfying by hearing the voices of your favorite characters.

The challenges of adding voice acting to visual novels

Despite its benefits, voice acting in visual novels is not always easy or simple to achieve . There are many challenges and difficulties that come with adding voice acting to visual novels, such as:

  • It can be expensive and time-consuming. Voice acting requires hiring professional voice actors, recording studios, sound engineers, and other staff. Voice acting also requires a lot of storage space, bandwidth, and processing power for the audio files. Voice acting also requires more testing and debugging to ensure the quality and compatibility of the audio.

  • It can be complicated and risky. Voice acting requires adapting the script, timing, and branching of the game to match the voice acting. Voice acting also requires obtaining the rights, permissions, and licenses from the original creators, publishers, and voice actors. Voice acting also requires dealing with legal issues, such as piracy, plagiarism, and censorship.

  • It can be controversial and divisive. Voice acting can cause disagreements and conflicts among the fans, developers, and voice actors. Voice acting can also change or ruin the original vision and intention of the game. Voice acting can also create or reinforce stereotypes and prejudices about the characters and their cultures.

These are some of the reasons why some visual novels do not have voice acting or have limited or partial voice acting. However, thanks to the efforts and passion of some dedicated fans, some visual novels have been enhanced with voice patches that add full or partial voice acting to the game.
